Right after the initial deployment, SMS PdM revealed several robots that were in various stages of failure that we were unaware of. This allowed our team to plan for the repairs and order the parts needed to keep our production floor running. We were experiencing a high volume of reducer failures due to the age and use of our equipment. Once we deployed SMS PdM we were alerted to several underlying mechanical problems on our critical robots that we were unaware of. Our team verified those issues independently with the guidance from the system and they were confirmed. We were able to make the repairs inside of our scheduled downtime, instead of unplanned downtime. This created an instant ROI for us in mitigation that was several times greater than the cost of the service. We have been alerted to several other issues since the initial installation. Tony and his team have done a fantastic job keeping us on top of our other robotic health issues. We have been able to continuously plan, monitor, schedule and avoid these wear-related failures with the predictive capabilities of SMS PdM.
We were an early adopter of SMS PdM several years ago as we were seeking a predictive solution to a robotic failure mode that created expensive losses during production. We were having repetitive reducer wear occurrences that would cause quality and repeatability issues leading to significantly large downtime events that became extremely costly, very quickly. Using SMS PdM helped us to predict these failures, plan and schedule for the replacements, and create a better robotic health maintenance program. We were now able to avoid the catastrophic downtime events and were also able to begin extending the life of our reducers. By moving to the condition-based approach, we were able to reduce our technicians' PM workload and redirect them to more effective work. Overall, the SMS PdM program has paid for itself many times over year after year through the mitigated cost of unplanned downtime.
